    • The following was written by E.J. Ward, 2050 Steves Ave, San Antonio Tx. 78210 and was submitted to the the Historical Society for the History of Gonzales County.
      "William Warren Johnson was born March 9, 1869 in Lalla Rock, Wharton County, Texas. He was the son of James Cathcart Johnston (January 12, 1834 Hillsboro, North Carolina - March 7, 1888 Hochheim, DeWitt County, Texas) and Katie H. Warren (July 18, 1840 Edenton, North Carolina - February 11, 1889 Hochheim, DeWitt County, Texas).
      Known to all his friends and neighbors as Bill Johnston December 18, 1889 married Nannie Kate Lipps born February 9, 1869 at Hochheim, DeWitt County, Texas, the daughter of W.E. Lipps.
      After trying his hand at farming, Bill Johnston moved to Gonzales and opened a restaurant where the cowhand and farmer and tradesman could eat in comfort in their work clothes. He really came to the attention of the townspeople after going into a burning house to save a small child. He and the child barely escaped the flames, and the walls caved in around them.
      He was city marshall for a while. After Dick Glover was killed by Cortez June 16,1901 Bill ran for the office of sheriff and was elected in 1902. He held that office until 1914.
      After leaving the sheriff's office he divided his time between Gonzles and Lubbock, Texas where he had a farm. Bill Johnston died in Lubbock November 11, 1928. Nannie Kate Johnston died in San Antonio March 8, 1954. Borth were buried in Gonzles.
      There were parents of a daughter and four sons: Katie Warren Johnston (May 22, 1891- July 23, 1980) married Arthur Ward; Ernest Lipps Johnston (July 23, 1893 - January 21, 1966 married Charlissa Barleman of Kerrville, Texas and had no children; Robert Scott Johnston (July 31, 1901 - August 30, 1976) married Eileen Jackson of Gonzales and had four boys and two girls; William Warren Johnston (December 16, 1904 - October 18, 1970) married Bertha Whiteside of Gonzales and had one son. Robert Bruce Johnston born October 22, 1899; died May 2, 1900.
