- The family of James and Jane Hawkins can be found in 1851 living in Devonport, Devon, England in the parish of Stoke Dameral. They were married on 21 July 1844 in Devon. James is 37 years old and Jane is 31 years old when their first son, Thomas James Robinson is born on 3 November 1850. At this time James is working as a Rigger on the docks in Devonport. A rigger is a hoist tackle worker and works on a ships rigging. They are living at 8 Cannon Street in the parish of Stock Dameral. By law all births have to be registered within 6 weeks. James reports the birth on 11 November 1850. The mother's name is given as Jane Hawkins formerly Robinson.
Devonport, a celebrated naval arsenal, in the parish of Stoke Dameral, is 1 1/2 miles (W.) from Plymouth 218 (W. by S. from London containing, with Morice Town and Stoke, 33,820 inhabitants, and including the parish of East Stonehouse, 43,532. In the reign of William III, a naval arsenal was established under the name of Plymouth Dock. Devonport is situated on an eminence, bounded on the south and west by the mouth of the Tamar, which forms the harbour of Hamoaze and on the east by Stonehouse creek. The town is of an oblong figure and the streets are regular and well built nearly intersecting each other at right angles.
In 1861 James continues to be a rigger at the AM Dock Yard. By this time James is 46 and Jane is 41 years old.
In 1871 Charlotte and Clara are not listed on the census with the rest of the family. James is still working as a rigger in the Dock Yards, Thomas, age 20 is working as a ship carpenter and John is going to school. Jane is listed as having been born in Edinburgh, Scotland. They are living at 3b in the back of 36 Gloucester St.
